This document harmonizes the post-resurrection appearances of Jesus as recorded in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, with supplementary references from Acts and 1 Corinthians 15. It respects the individual Gospel narratives while aligning their content into a coherent timeline.
Early Sunday Morning
1. Women Discover the Empty Tomb
- Matthew 28:1–8, Mark 16:1–8, Luke 24:1–8, John 20:1
- A group of women (Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, Salome, Joanna, and others) visit the tomb. They find the stone rolled away and the tomb empty. Angels tell them Jesus has risen and instruct them to tell the disciples.
Shortly after the tomb discovery
2. Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
- John 20:11–18, Mark 16:9–11,
- Mary Magdalene, having run to tell Peter and John and then returned to the tomb, sees Jesus but at first mistakes Him for the gardener. Jesus calls her by name, and she recognizes Him. He tells her not to cling to Him and instructs her to tell the disciples.
Likely on the way back from the tomb
3. Jesus Appears to the Other Women
- Matthew 28:9–10
- Jesus meets the group of women (possibly excluding Mary Magdalene now). They worship Him, and He tells them to inform the disciples that He will meet them in Galilee.
Later on Resurrection Day
4. Peter Sees the Risen Jesus
- Luke 24:34, 1 Corinthians 15:5
- Jesus appears privately to Peter (Simon), though the Gospels give no details about the encounter.
Still on Resurrection Sunday
5. Jesus Appears to Two Disciples on the Road to Emmaus
- Luke 24:13–35, Mark 16:12–13
- Jesus walks and talks with Cleopas and another disciple. They don’t recognize Him until He breaks bread. They return to Jerusalem to report to the eleven.
Evening of Resurrection Sunday
6. Jesus Appears to the Disciples (Without Thomas)
- Luke 24:36–43, John 20:19–23, Mark 16:14
- Jesus appears in the locked room. He shows them His wounds, eats food to prove He is not a ghost, and gives them peace. He breathes on them, saying, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”
Eight days later
7. Jesus Appears to the Disciples (With Thomas)
- John 20:26–29
- Jesus appears again in the locked room. This time Thomas is present and believes when he sees and touches Jesus’ wounds. Jesus praises those who will believe without seeing.
Some days later in Galilee
8. Jesus Appears to Seven Disciples at the Sea of Galilee
- John 21:1–14
- Jesus appears to Peter, Thomas, Nathanael, the sons of Zebedee, and two others. They have fished all night with no catch. Jesus tells them to cast on the right side; they catch 153 fish. He serves them breakfast on the shore.
During same Galilean appearance
9. Jesus Restores Peter
- John 21:15–23
- Jesus asks Peter three times, “Do you love Me?” paralleling Peter’s three denials. Jesus commissions Peter: “Feed My sheep.”
Probably days after the Sea of Galilee appearance
10. Jesus Appears on a Mountain in Galilee
- Matthew 28:16–20, 1 Corinthians 15:6 (possibly same event)
- Jesus appears to the eleven (and possibly more, as Paul mentions over 500 at once). He gives the Great Commission: “Go and make disciples of all nations…”
Timing unclear; possibly in Galilee or Jerusalem
11. Jesus Appears to James (His Brother)
- 1 Corinthians 15:7, Not recorded in the Gospels.
- Paul affirms that Jesus appeared to James, likely a pivotal moment in James’s later leadership role in the Jerusalem church.
Back in Jerusalem, 40 days after the Resurrection
12. Jesus Appears to the Disciples Before the Ascension
- Luke 24:44–49, Acts 1:3–8
- Jesus teaches the disciples about the Kingdom of God. He commands them to wait in Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit.
On the Mount of Olives 40 days after Resurrection
13. The Ascension
- Luke 24:50–53, Acts 1:9–12
- Jesus blesses the disciples and is taken up into heaven. Angels tell the disciples He will return in the same way.
