Prayer for the Nation

A Prayer of Thanksgiving for the United States on Its 250th Birthday

Almighty God,

Today we pause with grateful hearts to thank you for the United States of America as she marks two hundred and fifty years of national life.

You are the Creator of all nations and the Lord of history. Kingdoms rise and fall according to your sovereign will, yet throughout these generations you have shown remarkable mercy to this nation. We acknowledge that every good and perfect gift comes from your hand.

Thank you for preserving this land through times of war and peace, prosperity and hardship, unity and division. Thank you for the freedoms we have enjoyed, for the opportunity to worship without fear, to speak with liberty, to labor with purpose, and to pursue justice under law.

Thank you for the countless men and women who have served their neighbors with courage and sacrifice—those who established this nation, those who defended it, those who governed with integrity, those who taught our children, healed the sick, protected the weak, and quietly served in ways known only to you.

Thank you for the abundance you have provided and for the many blessings that generations of Americans have received. We recognize that these blessings are not earned by our wisdom or strength, but are expressions of your patience, kindness, and grace.

Yet, Lord, we also come before you with humility. We confess that our nation, like every nation, has often fallen short of your righteousness. We have too often trusted in ourselves instead of you, pursued our own desires instead of your ways, and neglected justice, mercy, and truth. Forgive us where we have sinned against you and against one another.

Grant wisdom to those who lead our nation. Give them humble hearts, discerning minds, and a steadfast commitment to justice. Strengthen our citizens with renewed respect for one another, even where disagreements remain. Help us to be people who seek truth, practice kindness, defend the vulnerable, honor what is good, and live as faithful neighbors.

Bless and empower the churches and believers of this land. May they proclaim your Word faithfully, exalt Jesus Christ without compromise, and bear witness to the hope of the gospel. Revive your people that they may be salt and light in every community.

As we celebrate the past, keep our eyes fixed upon the future you alone know. Teach us to remember that no earthly nation is eternal, but your kingdom endures forever. May our highest allegiance always be to Jesus Christ, our King, whose righteousness alone gives lasting hope.

We thank you for the privilege of living in this nation. May the years ahead be marked not merely by greater prosperity and influence, but by greater wisdom, greater justice, greater compassion, and a deeper reverence for you. To you, O Lord, belong all honor, all glory, and all praise, now and forever.

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen.
